Amyris balsamifera L. is a species of tree that grows in tropical regions. Resin obtained especially from the bark of this tree, Amyris balsamifera L. it is known as Palmarosa Oil and is used in the perfume, cosmetic and medical industries.
Palmarosa oil has been used locally in parts of Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa. The history of oil dates back to its use by the Aztecs in Mexico. Aztecs, Amyris balsamifera L. they used the oil for many different purposes, they found it especially valuable because of its smell, which is used in perfume making.
This oil is still produced today in Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and some other countries. The oil is obtained through steam distillation of shells. By exposing the shells to a vapor bath, the oil evaporates, and then turns into liquid form when cooled. The oil can be used in its pure form or mixed with other ingredients and used for perfumes and cosmetics.
The oil, similar to other tree oils, is known to have antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. It also has calming and stress-reducing effects. Therefore, it is also widely used in aromatherapy applications.
This oil has a sweet, woody, rich and warm smell. It has a similarity to sandalwood oil in smell, so it is sometimes also called "west India sandalwood". It also shows similarities to the smells of vanilla and cedar wood. Therefore, Palmarosa oil is often preferred as one of the base notes used in the perfume and cosmetics industry. In addition, its smell is relaxing and soothing, so it is also widely used in aromatherapy applications.
